Today's vox is brought to you from SF, sponsored by this picture located to your left if you read English, first column if you read Chinese. I was supposed to write about Saddam Hussein back when he was slain, but I procrastinated and now it's insane to write on a subject so lame in the perspective of the media. Or is it? It's old news, but what was wrong with it anyway, you say? Before I get there, I should remind you to look above and notice this vox is dedicated to Politics and Nirvana, (as in ideal happiness, reaching peace), not just politics. Now, when was the last time your entire family was struck by lightning all at the same time? If you're reading this in the U.S. and have not lived through such an extraordinary situation, then it is safe to say you cannot relate to people in the Middle East. Nobody I know can relate to having their entire family brutally obliterated off the face of the Earth for a government "test," by a leader whom you had no say in choosing.
HOWEVER, in such a case, there are expectations on each side of the political spectrum. To react or not to react, to be indifferent, to take a stand, to protest, to write, to keep one's mouth shut, etc. The United States, in my eyes, has an expectation of its public by now to 'fuck things up.' Remember this is only my opinion, but our country has no obligation to pretend to be the hero and 'save the day,' though it's purposely put its balls out on the line repeatedly.
It's no longer a surprise when we end up engaged in a war with another country.
I may be out of line here, but I believe in survival of the fittest. Some countries are just not strong enough to survive revolutions. France and England had a period of mayhem before they could get their feet back on the ground centuries ago. I say, leave the countries to fend for themselves, ESPECIALLY when they are not asking for help!
The U.S. is part of the United Nations, true, but as seen in the past, not a single nation is required to stick their hands in the acid so many do not. For some reason though, the U.S. thinks it has enough money to not only stick our hands in acid but after our hands are withering away and trying to dry out the last pieces of flesh, stick our hands back in! For what? Just to see what happens? Just to see how fewer numbers turn up this time because we learned about one new piece of technology that would save 2 more people per fight? How is that sensible? Meanwhile, our homeless people have tripled in numbers, and those numbers are simply estimates, for not everyone can be accounted for, our children are getting stupider, Wikipedia is open to the public, (including our 'stupider' students) and considered a valid source of knowledge, ebonics has been considered a language at one point, and our presidents are barely passing college with C+'s!
WHY ARE WE MEDDLING IN OTHER COUNTRIES' ISSUES? What are we-the Scooby Doo Gang?
Ok, so all this we know already, right? But we did it and it's done. So after finding this awful leader and taking him out of his country, we bring him to ours...naturally, we all assume we're going to take over this 'murdering nutcase' but NO. We're not even told what steps the U.S. is going to take thereafter.
First, we don't hear about Saddam Hussein for about a year, just like suddenly Osama Bin Laden disappeared and was just taken for dead 4 years ago (though we went ahead and continued the war against ¿him?)...
Then we hold Saddam in jail forever and have two college kids keep an eye on him who talked to him about his idolatry of President Reagan and how much he liked Cheetos. WTF? College kids are guarding a jail for the second Hitler?
Then we hold a few hearings for him here in the U.S. and suddenly there he goes, off to his country because they're imploring of us that they handle the matter. And we say YES. Sure, take him! WE SPENT MILLIONS OF DOLLARS AND MILLIONS OF LIVES FINDING THIS GUY TO GET HIM OUT OF YOUR COUNTRY, BUT WE'LL JUST SEND HIM BACK. If the U.S. is going to meddle its fingers and the lives of its people in others' business, shouldn't it finish the job?
Are we in this all the way or are we going to put our people and other people in the worst possible, traumatizing life circumstances and then pull out like an irresponsible 17-year old having sex for the first time?
I guess it's the latter. We send Saddam Hussein back to his country, and the first thing they do is have an 'official trial' for him and of course, by popular demand, sentence him to death by what was it? hanging or something old-school similar to? OH! Now the U.S. is perpetuating witch trial methods they banned in the past in a country we were supposedly trying to fix and make stable and democratic?
Somehow none of this checks out. What should we have done with the guy? Maybe seclude him from the world, humiliate him and shame him in a prison where all other people go for punishment for all the crimes they commit against innocent people... How is he different than any other serial killer? Are we saying a child molestor who shows no remorse has more right to live than Saddam Hussein?
I don't know, but we didn't put him in prison so it doesn't matter anymore, does it? How can we stand for this contradicting bullshit while all of our friends and cousins are away from home, dying for something that started over religion? They don't even know what they're fighting for anymore! What is going on?
Who are you voting for in the next presidential election? Somebody with the same mentality, somebody who's going in because they feel the same anger and passion we do, or somebody who has no idea how to finish popping popcorn after it's been sitting out of the microwave for hours? All 3 are awful choices. Where do we move-to another country where the U.S. is going to start another war in the next decade?
And why aren't we doing something drastic to prevent school murders? Now there's college massacres!??? Man, don't even get me started!
